Cambridge IGCSE Economics (syllabus code 0455) introduces students to the core ideas of economics and how markets, governments and the international economy work. This guide explains what the course covers, how it is structured, how the assessment works, and how to prepare effectively. It is specifically about Cambridge IGCSE, not other International GCSE specifications.
A note on the current syllabus. This guide refers to the Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 syllabus. Cambridge publishes a 2026 syllabus and a 2027-2029 syllabus; assessment details can differ between versions, so confirm which syllabus version your school has entered you for, and verify the exact paper structure, durations and mark allocations against the official Cambridge 0455 syllabus document before relying on any summary.
HK Study Hub also supports other International GCSE specifications where the relevant tutor teaches the student's course. This guide is specifically about Cambridge IGCSE.
What Is Cambridge IGCSE Economics?
Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 is a course in economics taken at the end of the IGCSE stage, usually around age 16. It develops an understanding of economic concepts, the ability to apply them to real-world contexts, and the skills to analyse and evaluate economic situations using data and diagrams. It is widely accepted as preparation for further study in economics and related subjects.
The course is not a full economics textbook. It covers the foundational ideas that economists use to think about the world, and it tests whether you can use those ideas, not just recall them.
The Current Syllabus Cycle
Cambridge maintains and updates its syllabuses on a cycle. For 0455, a 2026 syllabus and a 2027-2029 syllabus are published. Because content and assessment can change between versions, the first step in any preparation plan is to confirm which syllabus version your school has entered you for, and to use the official Cambridge syllabus document for that version as the authoritative source of content and assessment detail.
Economic Concepts at a High Level
Rather than listing every syllabus point, the following groups give a useful map of the course. Use the official syllabus for the definitive topic list.
The Basic Economic Problem
The course starts with scarcity, choice and opportunity cost: the idea that resources are limited and every choice has a cost. You learn about the factors of production and how different economies answer the questions of what, how and for whom to produce.
Microeconomics
Microeconomics looks at individual markets. You study demand and supply, how prices are determined, market equilibrium and disequilibrium, and elasticity. You also study the role of firms, market structures and the effects of government intervention such as taxes and price controls.
Macroeconomics
Macroeconomics looks at the economy as a whole. You study government aims such as growth, employment and stable prices; the tools of fiscal and monetary policy; inflation; and unemployment. You learn how governments try to manage the economy and the trade-offs they face.
Development and International Trade
The course covers economic development, poverty and living standards, and then international trade and globalisation: specialisation, exchange rates, the balance of payments and the arguments for and against free trade and protection.
Diagrams and Data
Diagrams are central to economics. Supply and demand diagrams, equilibrium and shifts are not optional extras; they are the language economists use to reason. You need to draw diagrams accurately and, just as importantly, to explain what they show. See our diagrams guide for a full breakdown.
Data is equally important. Many questions give you data to interpret, and the ability to read, describe and draw conclusions from data is a skill the assessment tests directly.
Application, Analysis and Evaluation
0455 is not only about definitions. The assessments test application (using concepts in real-world contexts), analysis (breaking down a situation and showing cause and effect), and evaluation (weighing arguments and reaching a reasoned judgement). A student who has memorised definitions can handle recall questions, but the assessments are designed to reward students who can use economics to reason about a situation.
This means preparation should go beyond learning definitions. Building the ability to apply, analyse and evaluate is what produces reliable results. See our guide to getting a 9 in IGCSE Economics for a structured approach.
Assessment Overview
0455 is assessed through written papers. In the 2026 syllabus, the assessment includes a multiple-choice paper and a structured-questions paper; the structured paper carries the greater weight. The structured paper tests data response, analysis and evaluation. Because the exact paper structure, durations and mark allocations can differ between syllabus versions, verify the assessment structure for your sitting against the official Cambridge 0455 syllabus document.
What does not change is the emphasis: the assessments test recall, application, analysis and evaluation together, often using data and diagrams. A balanced preparation plan addresses all four.
Revision Strategy
- Start from the syllabus. Use the official 0455 syllabus as your checklist so you know exactly what is examinable.
- Master definitions first. Precise definitions are the foundation for analysis and evaluation.
- Practise diagrams. Draw and label diagrams until they are automatic, then practise explaining what each shows.
- Use data. Work through data-response questions regularly so reading and interpreting data becomes routine.
- Practise evaluation. For any argument, ask what the other side would say and what the conclusion depends on.
- Keep an error log. Record every mistake and the reason for it, then revisit those topics.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics Guide FAQs
Is this guide about Cambridge or all IGCSE boards? This guide is specifically about Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455. Other boards have their own specifications and assessment arrangements.
Do I need to memorise every definition? Precise definitions matter, but understanding is more valuable than rote recall. The assessments reward application, analysis and evaluation, not just recall.
How important are diagrams? Diagrams are central. You need to draw them accurately and explain what they show. See our diagrams guide.
Which syllabus version applies to me? Confirm with your school and against the official Cambridge 0455 syllabus document. Do not assume details from one version carry over to another.
Can tutoring guarantee a grade? No. Tutoring can target your gaps and improve your technique, but it cannot guarantee an outcome. See our IGCSE Economics tutoring in Hong Kong.
